How To Keep Your PC Cool

Cooling is one of the most important things to pay attention to when putting together a system, or even on your existing system. It can sometimes be overlooked, or dismissed as something trivial. In fact keeping your computer cool can help it run more stable, and last longer.  Not only does this apply to the CPU, but to other components inside your computer's case.

Now, it's possible to go overboard with cooling, but that is much better than not having enough. There is a cooler designed for almost every component in your case, although not all of them are required. :)

  • The most important parts of the cooling system for your pc are the CPU's heatsink/fan and having proper airflow through your case, so all components inside the case can 'breathe'. Make sure you don't skimp on the CPU's heatsink/fan. It doesn't cost very much to get a quality cooler for your cpu, only around $15-$20.
  • For most systems these days, the next candidate in line for more cooling would be the video card. Many cards today such as the Voodoo 3's and TNT2's can add a lot of heat to your system. There are many third party cooling solutions available. Some cards already come from the factory with both a heatsink and fan.
  • After cases, CPU's and video cards, you can opt to choose a cooling solution for your hard drives too, since they can contribute a good amount of heat to your system, especially newer 7200 and 10,000 RPM models. Also note that CD ROM, DVD ROM, and CDRW drives can also add heat too.
