How To Choose Memory

How Much?
  • 64MB
    • The bare minimum amount of memory you will want to have in your system these days.
  • 128MB
    • A very good amount of RAM to have in your system.
  • 256MB
    • It wont be too long before this amount will be recommended, so if you have it now, you won't have to worry about it later. The good thing about RAM though is it will usually become obsolete after you motherboard and CPU do.
  • 512MB and Greater
    • Probably a waste of money at this point. Only large systems doing processes involving large files or pictures would need this much RAM. The price drops fast enough on RAM that its not a good investment.
DIMMs vs. SIMMs
  • Check the motherboard you have or are planning on purchasing. What kind of memory slots does it have, if its a newer board it should have DIMM slots and if you are purchasing a board it should have DIMM slots. Some boards come with both DIMM and SIMM slots, but that is rare. Note SIMMS must be installed in matching pairs.
PC100 vs. PC66
  • Speed
    • Make sure you are buying the type of RAM that goes into your motherboard some older motherboards only take PC66 DIMMs and some will accept PC66 or PC100 RAM. If the board can accept PC100 RAM be sure to purchase PC100 ram it is much faster.
  • Parity
    • Some motherboards don't accept parity RAM be sure to check to see if your motherboard can accept parity RAM. Also you usually have to stick with the same kind that you already have in your motherboard if you are adding RAM so if you have parity now, you need to make sure any additional RAM you add is parity. Usually if you don't know you can be safe with purchasing non-parity RAM as it will usually work in most motherboards.
